STEEL CITY: AN INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE

For more than a century, steel mills, coke works, coal-fired power plants and industrial infrastructure have defined the landscape of Western Pennsylvania. Built along the region’s rivers and throughout its valleys, these facilities helped establish Pittsburgh as one of the nation's leading industrial centers and left a lasting imprint on the region.

Today, that landscape continues to change. Some mills and industrial facilities remain in operation, while others have closed, been demolished or are being considered for new uses. Shifting economic forces, changes in manufacturing and growing energy demands are reshaping the industrial landscape that once defined the region.

These photographs, part of my ongoing documentary project, Of Iron & Rust, document the industrial sites and structures of Western Pennsylvania, capturing both the enduring presence of industry and the transformation of a landscape shaped by generations of steelmaking, coal and energy production.
