Following massive protests that drew hundreds of thousands into the streets, Egypt’s military staged a coup d’état on July 3, 2013, removing Mohamed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president. His ouster ended a turbulent year in office and ushered in a military-backed government that cracked down on Morsi’s supporters and the Muslim Brotherhood.
